United were without Rooney, Paul Scholes and Nemanja Vidić through suspension yet still took the lead when Ryan Giggs tapped a ten-metre free-kick for Ronaldo to fire in. The visitors drew level when John Carew rose above Gary Neville to head in Gareth Barry's right-wing centre before Carew crossed for Gabriel Agbonlahor to head Villa in front. The home side were on course to suffer a third successive league defeat for the first time since December 2001, only for Ronaldo to lash in a fine equaliser. Darren Fletcher, Ronaldo and substitute Danny Welbeck all had chances to win it before 17-year-old debutant Federico Macheda curled in in added time to secure a victory that took the champions back above Liverpool FC at the top of the table.
